The Cricket in Times Square (CH 1)

CHAPTER 1 – Tucker

READY TO ROW:

Parker and I read The Cricket in TImes Square when he was in the second grade. We really enjoyed the story and Parker made his own cricket. He actually keeps it on his desk. He brought him down for this row.

Cover Art:

Parker chose to draw the cricket in New York as his cover art for this row.

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Parker wrote and memorized Proverbs 28:27 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

History & Geography – New York State:

Parker read U.S.A. Travel Guides New York on our EPIC app.

He used his watercolors to paint the state of New York on his U.S. Map.

He also completed a state report for New York using the template from our Grab Bag.

History & Geography – New York City:

Parks read This is New York by Miroslav Sasek.

Parker color-coded New York and marked New York City on the world map in our Grab Bag.

He also read Larry Gets Lost in New York City.

Parker read about the subway in An Uncommon History of Common Things.

Parker read Engineering The NYC Subway System on our EPIC app.

Life Skills – What is Your World?

Parker illustrated “his world” in his FIAR Notebook.,

LANGUAGE ARTS:

A Fantasy Story:

Parker read The Jungle Book as his secondary reader. He didn’t enjoy this story as much as he enjoyed watching the Disney animated movie when he was little.

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

SCIENCE:

Mice:

First, Parker read About Rodents on our EPIC app.

Next, he read about mice in National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia.

He also read about harvest mice in Slow Down.

Parker color-coded the parts of a mouse worksheet from our Grab Bag.

ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:

Schoolroom Christmas Tree:

We started rowing this book around Thanksgiving, but we tend to decorate early. Parker and I added our FIAR and book-themed ornaments to the Christmas tree in the playroom.

This year, we added our Cricket in the Matchbook to the tree too!
