The Cricket in Times Square (CH 3)

CHAPTER 3 – Chester

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote, illustrated and memorized Psalm 23 as his Bible verse for this chapter. He used the Bible Verse copywork pages from our Grab Bag.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Geography – Connecticut:

Parker read U.S.A. Travel Guides Connecticut on our EPIC app.

Since we were past Thanksgiving, Parker read about Connecticut in The Twelve Days of Christmas in New England.

Afterwards, he completed the crack-the-code Christmas in Connecticut worksheet from our Grab Bag.

Life Skills – Making New Friends:

Parker has a really great group of friends at church. They grew up together and have grown into a great group of young men. They have unique talents and hobbies, but they share a love of sports and playing video games.

They cherish their friendship, but they are equally great about extending friendship to new people that they meet. It’s wonderful to see them welcoming new kids into their Junior High class and youth group activities.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Vocabulary Words:

Parker completed the vocabulary worksheet for this chapter from our Grab Bag.

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Creative Writing Exercise:

Parker wrote about his version of a perfect picnic in his FIAR Notebook.

Post-Writing Skills – Editing & Proofing:

Parker has plenty of opportunity to proofread, edit and rewrite weekly creative writing prompts, essays and more using the Blackbird and Company 8th Grade Collection. It really is the best language arts program and I’m so glad I was able to use it for both boys during their middle school education.

SCIENCE:

Bird Migration:

Parker read about bird migrations in the “Bird Counters” section of our Citizen Scientists book.

This – of course – prompted us to read Bird Count, another wonderful FIAR row. As I mentioned previously, we are trying to re-read as many FIAR books as we can during Parker’s last FIAR homeschool year.

Swallows:

Based on the suggested birds in the FIAR manual, Parker chose to research swallows.

First, he read Animal Neighbors Swallows by Stephen Savage.

Then he read The Swallow (Life Cycles) by Sabrina Crewe.

He also completed a creature report about swallows.
