CHAPTER 4 – Harry Cat
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Romans 8:28 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Life Skills – Silver Linings:
Walt Disney’s Pollyanna was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this unit. After her parents died, she was shipped off to her rich aunt in a town that needed brightening. If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend watching it.
I added this clip about “the glad game” as well as others to The Cricket in Times Square playlist.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Vocabulary Words:
Parker completed the vocabulary worksheet for this chapter from our Grab Bag.
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.
Nonverbal Communication:
Parker recently read about nonverbal communication while rowing Helen Keller.

As a fun reminder, Parker read So Much More to Helen on our EPIC app.

He also completed the ASL Christmas riddles from our Grab Bag.

Extending this unit further, we leaned into a scientific direction. Parker read Above and Beyond with Communication on our EPIC app.

Afterwards, Parker used a video tutorial on our playlist, to sketch the various facial expressions we use as a part of “nonverbal communication”.
SCIENCE:
Germs – Bacteria & Viruses:

Parker read Tiny Creatures – The World of Microbes.

Afterwards, he completed a set of Living Things & the Kingdoms worksheet set from our Grab Bag.

Before moving on and in our quest to read as many FIAR books as we can this year, we ended this unit by reading Madeline. It’s an odd tie-in, because we studied germs while rowing Madeline years ago. We did a fun germs unit while talking about the human body, infections and appendectomies.
Chemical Element – Neon:

Parker is currently researching the Elemental Journal Bundle from Blackbird and Company.

He also read about Neon in Our World in Pictures – The Elements Book.

Afterwards, he completed a periodic treasure hunt using a worksheet from our Grab Bag.
FINE ARTS:
Perspective – Near and Far:

I remember learning about perspective while rowing All the Secrets of the World. We went on our green belt and framed a picture of one of our favorite climbing trees in the background with us front and center. Though it appeared to be smaller than we were, the kids knew differently. It was a great demonstration we never forgot.

Parker sketched a baseball scene – from field to stands – depicting “near and far” in his FIAR art notebook.

Parker picked up on “near and far” while we read The Great Spruce while covering Christmas in New York.
ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:
Christmas in New York:

We began celebrating Christmas in New York by reading The Great Spruce and Home Alone 2 Lost in New York.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for The Cricket in Times Square Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the books, activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our The Cricket in Times Square Pinterest Board.
Youtube Playlist:
As with our other rows, we created The Cricket in Times Square playlist.
