CHAPTER 8 – A SURPRISING DISCOVERY
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Psalm 139:23-24 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
History – Henry Becquerel:

Parker read Brittanica Kids article about Henri Becquerel.
Life Skills – Grandparents:

Parker and his siblings were surrounded by their grandparents their entire life. They were present for every birthday, holiday, and all the days in-between. In a previous post, I mentioned the sorrow losing my father and my mother-in-law in the last two years, but we are also so grateful for all the memories we made when they were with us.

Thankfully, we still have “Papa”, my father-in-law, with us. He is such a wonderful blessing to our family.

Just for fun, Parker and I read a few of our favorite grandparent books – How to Babysit a Grandpa then we read How to Babysit a Grandma.
Life Skills – Persistence:
Persistence really does pay off. Parker’s Grandma used to quote St. Jerome’s poem, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Til your good is better and your better is best.”

More recently, Parker rowed Helen Keller. Both Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, exemplified persistence. As a review, Parker read A Picture Book About Helen Keller by David Adler. I absolutely love his books. He provides the perfect content to cover any unit for younger or older students. This time around, we wanted to learn about other people who inspire persistence.

First, Parker read First Flight the Story of Tom Tate and the Wright Brothers. For younger kids, The Wondrous Whirligig is a wonderful introduction to the Wright Brothers.
Life Skills – Cooperation:

We are a Sesame Street Family. Our kids grew up watching Sesame Street, playing with Sesame Street toys and cuddling Sesame Street pals. Harry & Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie, Grover, Elmo and Big Bird are household names.

It seemed only fitting to read Sesame Street The Together Book. Our kids will NEVER outgrow the characters.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.
Writing Your Own Science Thesis:

Parker has never really loved science; however, he does share his sister’s love for oceanic creatures. So after much thought, he planned to write his scientific thesis around recent ocean discoveries.
SCIENCE:
Uranium:

Parker read about Uranium in Our World in Pictures The Elements Book.

Afterwards, he completed the Radioactive Actinides worksheet from our Grab Bag.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the books, activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our Marie Curie and The Discovery of Radium Pinterest Board.
Youtube Playlist:
As with our other rows, we created a Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium playlist.
