Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium (CH 11-12)

CHAPTER 11-12 – AWARDS and Sorrows, Tragedy

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Ephesians 2:7 (Chapter 11) and John 5:24 (Chapter 12) as his Bible verses for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Life Skills – Generosity – Comparing Carver and Curie:

We recently studied George Washington Carver, so I decided to take this unit in a different direction. We chose to focus on other people who gave back to society.

Rachel Carson:

Parker recently studied Rachel Carson while rowing The Tree Lady.

During that time, Parker read Who Was Rachel Carson?

Since it was a few years ago, I thought he could refresh his memory by reading Rachel Carson and Her Book That Changed the World on our EPIC app.

Hugh Bennett:

Hugh Bennett wasn’t as popular as Rachel Carson, but he contributed towards society.

Parker read Erosion: How Hugh Bennett Saved America’s Soil and Ended the Dust Bowl on Kindle.

While searching for a book about generosity, I found A Year of Borrowed Men on our EPIC app. This book was based on a true story set in German. It spoke of the kindness of one German family who used French prisoners-of-war to help run their farm during World War II. It was a beautiful story and even mentioned gingerbread like we studied in the previous chapter.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Vocabulary:

Since there was only one vocabulary word from chapters 11 and 12, I decided to combine it with the vocabulary words from chapters 13-15.

SCIENCE:

The Dangers of Radioactive Materials:

Parker watched Sung History’s “Walk it Off” on our EPIC app. I also added it on our playlist.

Parker also read a Brittanica Kids article about Radiation Sickness.

Radiation Exposure – The Story of Sadako Sasaki:

Sadako Sasaki was Hiroshima survivor who developed Leukemia from radiation exposure. She was only two years old when she was diagnosed. I remember reading her story with my daughter Haley when she was in the fifth grade.

A few years ago, Parker also read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr.

To review her story, he read Sadako’s Cranes by Judith Loske on our EPIC app.

FINE ARTS:

Drawing – Using Our Illustrator’s Line Technique:

First, we reviewed the illustration from our book.

Since Parker loves sports, he decided to draw a basketball game with people in the stands. We used our FIAR Art Notebook for this assignment.

A Famous Sculpture – The Thinker:

For this unit, we just talked about The Thinker and refreshed our memory with a picture, but Parker was already familiar with this famous work of art.

Later, I found this article from Brittanica.
