CHAPTER 1 – “In Which I Begin My Memoirs”

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Proverbs 10:4 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

History – The Time Frame of Our Story:

Parker read Timelines of Everything.

Geography – Ireland:

First, Parker read This is Ireland by M. Sasek.

Afterwards, he completed a country report from our Hitty Grab Bag.

History – Antiques:

This subject was particularly close to Parker’s heart as he is an avid baseball card collector. He and his dad go to local shops and card shows buying and selling with various traders. He also has his own online shop through CollX.

He also watched antique clips on our Hitty playlist.

Life Skills – Listening to your Conscience:

Whenever this subject comes up, I always think of Jiminy Cricket and Pinnochio. Of course it was added to our Hitty playlist.

Parker is old enough to understand that his personal walk with Christ depends on listening to the Holy Spirit’s conviction. It’s wonderful to be able to dig in deeper spiritually as our kids develop their own walk with Christ. I love how godly principles and lessons of integrity are woven throughout the pages of the FIAR curriculum.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Vocabulary Words:

Parker completed the vocabulary worksheet for this chapter.

Point of View:

We have studied point of view many times in our previous rows. He reviewed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person point of view.

Afterwards, Parker completed a Point of View worksheet from our Hitty Grab Bag.

Writing Your Own Memoirs:

For this topic, Parker read the information in the teacher’s manual then watched several “memoir” clips on our Hitty playlist.

Onomatopoeia:

We have read various books about onomatopoeia through the years. Some of our earliest FIAR memories about this literary device come from rowing Storm in the Night.

After reading the FIAR manual, Parker completed an onomatopoeia worksheet from our Grab Bag.

Understanding Verse:

Parker watched a few clips about samplers and poems to cover this unit.

SCIENCE:

Bats:

Parker read Bats by Gail Gibbons.

Afterwards, he completed a Parts of the Bat worksheet from our Hitty Grab Bag and we glued it in his FIAR Notebook.

Conch Shells:

First, Parker read A Shell is Cozy.

He also read About Mollusks and About Habitats Seashores.

Afterwards, he used Julia Rothman’s Ocean Anatomy to complete a Parts of the Shell worksheet from our Hitty Grab Bag. I highly recommend buying a copy, but I also included a flip through clip on our Hitty playlist.

FINE ARTS:

Quill Pens:

Quill pens makes me remember Jordan rowing The Hatmaker’s Sign when he was younger. Of course, Parker and I had a project of rereading FIAR books this year, so we took the opportunity to read The Hatmaker’s Sign.

Jordan created a quill pen while rowing The Hatmaker’s Sign.

I brought out the same ink well so Parker could use it for this fine arts project. Parker created a quill pen following a youtube tutorial on our playlist.

Drawing Animals More Realistically:

Parker used this art technique while completing a Creature Report for his Animals of Asia unit while wrapping up A Drop Around the World.

TWO ONGOING PROJECTS:

Research Project – Beginning the Process:

After much consideration, Parker decided to research coral reefs. We have studied coral reefs so many times, exploring the creatures, their habitat, and the environmental issues threatening them. This tied in nicely with our tradition of studying the ocean at the end of the school year.

Service Project – Choosing Your Service Project:

Parker chose to collect empty bottles to turn in for CRV cash. He plans to collect, save and use the money to donate towards Samaritan Purse’s Operation Christmas Child. He added this information in his FIAR Notebook.

We thought we would collect through the end of the school year, but we just kept collecting throughout the summer. His friends also helped add to his empty bottle/can collection. He really enjoyed this project.

Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
