Skylark (CH 13-15)

CHAPTER 13-15

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and lesson material for this chapter, using the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

On other days, he continued reading and studying Bible lessons with his Power of Words book.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Psalm 70:5 as his Bible verse for this chapter set.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Life Skills – Working Through Fears:

Talking through our fears is essential in our home. Fear can cripple us and keep us captive, but the truth of God’s word can give us victory over fear. God wants to give us the abundant life and that is only possible as we walk with Him, bringing every thought captive and fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

Since this is our last year studying FIAR, I thought it would be fun to incorporate some of the books we previously rowed for topical units. We read both The Bravest of Us All and Storm in the Night, because they both covered the subject of fear. Parker rowed The Bravest of Us All two years ago; however, Jordan rowed Storm in the Night on his own, so this was Parker’s first time reading it.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker responded to the writing and discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.

Vocabulary:

Parker completed the worksheet for the Chapter 13-15 vocabulary words from our Skylark Grab Bag.

Creative Writing – The Wittings One Year Later:

Parker wrote what he imagined life would be like for the Witting family a year later.

Additional Reading:

Parker is reading Painting the Game. This is his favorite Patricia MacLachlan story. He’s also reading Strawberry Girl too. Parker is enjoying Mary Emma & Company , because it’s not set on the “prairie”. Let’s face it Moody is a great storyteller.

SCIENCE:

Genetics:

Parker read about genetics in Me and My Family Tree.

Last year, my husband and I did DNA tests through Ancestry. During that time, Parker read quite a bit from our National Geographic Kids Guide to Genealogy book.

This year, we surprised Parker and his siblings with their own Ancestry DNA kits at Easter. It’s been exciting seeing the results and subsequent updates from Ancestry.

Sea & Prairie Notebooks:

First, Parker read About Habitats Oceans and About Habitats Grasslands.

Next, we made a master list of things to add to his Prairie and Ocean notebooks. We made sure not to duplicate anything added while rowing Sarah, Plain and Tall.

ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:

Apple Tasting Tree:

Parker colored a Pink Lady apple variety for our tasting tree.

Afterwards, he added it to our apple tasting tree. This is our last Apple Tasting Tree, so we’re trying to fill it up with many varieties.

HELPFUL LINKS:

Chapter Book GRAB BAG:

I started creating a GRAB BAG for the Skylark Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.
