History – The Horseless Carriage:

Parker read about the timeline of automobiles in the Usborne Book of Knowledge.

He also looked at the Car pages, from “steam engine” to “driverless cars” in the Smithsonian’s Timeline of Everything.

History – The Time Frame of at the End of Our Story:

Parker reviewed the 19th and 20th century pages in the Smithsonian’s Timeline of Everything.

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Vocabulary Words:

Parker completed the vocabulary worksheet for this chapter.

Writing a Complete Story:

Parker has had ample practice writing stories since his elementary days; however, this year is all about writing essays. Blackbird and Company’s The Essay Volume 3, focuses on wonderful examples of “complete stories” in children’s literature.

Personification:

Parker studied personification many times over the years. We’ve read many books and coordinated projects to reinforce the concept. He created a little lighthouse and bridge while rowing The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge, he created a living tree while rowing A New Coat for Anna, he painted a moon character and completed a worksheet on figurative language while rowing A Kite for Moon, and he read Papa Piccolo and completed a Personification worksheet while rowing Angelo.

PROJECTS:

Research Project:

Parker finalized his research project using the information he collected from Coral Reefs by Gail Gibbons, Coral Reef Ecosystems by Tammy Gagne, Coral Reefs Matter by Julie Murphy, The Brilliant Deep by Kate Mesner, and The Great Barrier Reef by Helen Scales.

Service Project:

Though Parker has collected many recyclable containers so far, he plans to continue collecting them through the summer. Once he redeems them for cash, he will then donate the proceeds to Operation Christmas Child.
