Coral Reefs:

Parker read Coral Reefs Matter on our EPIC app. Afterwards, he completed The Lifecycle of a Coral Polyp worksheet from our Hitty Grab Bag.

Distillation:

I love this experiment, because it was an experiment I did in junior high. I clearly remember our “wilderness guide” informing us that if we were ever stranded and ran out of water, this experiment would give us fresh water. He taught us how to dig a hole in direct sunlight, place a vessel in the center of the hole to collect water. Place leaves and other items that contained water in the hole around the vessel. Then loosely cover the top of the hole with a garbage bag and place stones all around the hole, securing the garbage bag in place. Lastly, put one small stone in the center so that the evaporated water will collect at the top of the underside of the garbage bag and drop right into the hole.

Parker read and completed a Distillation experiment from our Explore Water book. We placed it in a sunny location outside and checked it to find drinking water in the small mason jar.

So whether you’re on land or sea, the concept is the same. Take anything that contains water and use the same concept of evaporating the fresh water to drink.

FINE ARTS:

Watercolor:

First, Parker read The Brilliant Deep on our EPIC app.. This book by Kate Messner is beautifully illustrated by Matthew Forsythe using watercolor couche and pencil.

Afterwards, Parker sketched his own corals in his FIAR Art Book then painted them with watercolor.

Cooking – Rice and Beans:

Using the recipe in the FIAR manual, Parker began by measuring the red beans. We soaked them overnight as suggested.

Afterwards, he poked a hole in the young coconut. Then we drained the coconut milk. Parker thoroughly enjoyed drinking the coconut milk.

Next, we took the coconut outside. We wrapped it in a towel and he used a hammer to break it open.

We brought it back inside. He scooped out the young coconut flesh. He grated enough of the meat to use in the recipe. The rest we placed in the fridge to munch on afterward. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a picture of the final product. We served it and got mixed reviews from our family.
