The Story of George Washington Carver (CH 12)

CHAPER 12

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read the FIAR Bible lessons for this Chapter from the FIAR Bible Supplement.

Bible Verse:

For this chapter, Parker wrote and memorized Ecclesiastes 9:10a.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered his discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Vocabulary:

Parker completed this chapter’s vocabulary worksheet from our Grab Bag.

SCIENCE:

Soil – What Role Nitrogen Plays:

In Farm Anatomy, Parker read sections about the layers of dirt, nitrogen’s contribution to soil and the benefits of rotating crops.

Parker read about Nitrogen in Our World in Pictures Elements Book.

Afterwards, he completed a periodic table of elements treasure hunt featuring nitrogen.

Compost:

Parker read Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals.

Afterwards, he color-coded a compost worksheet from our Grab Bag and glued it into his FIAR notebook.

We took kitchen scraps outside to our compost piles.

Parker also read Compost Basics by Mari Schuh.

Afterwards, we went outside to create our compost experiment.

Legumes:

First, Parker read Grow With Me Bean on our EPIC app.

He also read about beans and peas in Julia Rothman’s Farm Anatomy and Food Anatomy.

Lastly, Parker planted various legume seeds to start indoors.

The following week our beans were sprouting, but the rest were molded. Well, at least we’ll have beans to transfer to the garden.

Genealogy:

On days Parker doesn’t have a science unit, he continues reading from the National Geographic Kids Guide to Genealogy book.

FINE ARTS:

Making Bricks Out of Clay:

First, Parker read Bricks by Terry Cash.

Afterwards, Parker used our Crayola air-dry clay mixed with raffia pieces, simulating straw, to create bricks. We set them aside so they could harden.
