CHAPER 14
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read the FIAR Bible lessons for this Chapter from the FIAR Bible Supplement.
Bible Verse:

For this chapter, Parker wrote and memorized Philippians 4:19.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Life Skills – Waste Not, Want Not:
This was both a life skill and science unit. We rowed this chapter the week before Earth Day, so it was quite apropos.

First, Parker read Earth Smart How to Take Care of the Environment.

He also read Where Does the Garbage Go?

Afterwards, he color coded the Earth Smart worksheet from our Grab Bag.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.
Folios and Pamphlets – Creating Your Own:

Parker used Microsoft Office to create a pamphlet. He decided to make one that centered around World War II, since he needed an end of book project for I Am David, his latest BFB Literacy unit.
SCIENCE:
Sweet Potatoes:

Parker read about sweet potatoes in Julia Rothman’s Farm Anatomy book.

He also read about sweet potatoes in our Trees, Leaves, Flowers and Seeds book.
Genealogy:

On the days we didn’t have a FIAR science unit, Parker continued reading from the National Geographic Kids Guide to Genealogy book.
FINE ARTS:
Baking Sweet Potatoes:
As soon as I saw that we would be studying sweet potatoes, I picked some up from Trader Joes. I rubbed them in oil, wrapped them in foil and baked them in the oven. The kids LOVED them!

Parker read through all the various recipes, but chose to simply bake them in the oven. We went to the kitchen and I showed him how to prick all sides with a fork, rub them in oil and wrap them in foil. After we prepared them, we placed them in a 400 degree oven for an hour. Again, they were naturally sweet and delicious.
