CHAPTER 1 – A STRANGE FEVER
READY TO ROW:
Cover Art:

Parker chose to draw an open book written in braille as his cover art for this row.
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Mark 10:52 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
History – The Timeframe of Our Story:

Helen Keller lived a long, full life and experienced a full life. I brought out our Timelines of Everything book so Parker could peruse through it. I guided him from “The Age of Revolution” to “The Modern World”.
History – Scarlett Fever:

I found an article on Brittanica Kids so Parker could read about Scarlett Fever.
In addition, I added a Scarlet Fever clip to our Helen Keller playlist.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker responded to the writing and discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.
Mary Ingalls – Another Girl Blinded by Scarlet Fever:
We watched many Little House on the Prairie episodes when the kids were younger. Parker was too young to remember.
We watched part of the episode when Mary and Pa talked about her declining vision and the moment she lost her sight completely.
Read-Aloud:

We’re reading aloud Mary Emma & Company as time permits. This particular book is Parker’s favorite. Let’s face it Moody is a great storyteller.
SCIENCE:
Human Anatomy – The Eye:

Parker read about the human eye in the Smithsonian Human Body! book.

Afterwards, Parker completed the Parts of the Eye worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.
FINE ARTS:
Making Toys for Children:

Parker perused through Making Toys for Children by Joan Moloney. You can also read it online at the internet archive HERE.

After careful deliberation, Parker decided to construct his own pom-pom toy.
ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:
Apple Tasting Tree:

Parker colored a Gala apple variety for our tasting tree.

Afterwards, he added it to our apple tasting tree. We’re trying to fill it up with as many varieties as we can.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for the Helen Keller Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our Helen Keller Pinterest board.
Youtube Playlist:
As with our other rows, we created a Helen Keller Playlist with read-alouds, music, science, and other clips.
