The Cricket in Times Square (CH 10)

CHAPTER 10 – The Dinner Party

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Matthew 25:23 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

History – Vaudeville:

I added a few “Vaudeville” clips on our The Cricket in Times Square playlist.

Career Path – Careers in Music:

Parker is pretty familiar with music production in our home. Both his dad and older brother use various programs to produce backgrounds, worship team tracks and collaborate with other people using various media platforms.

I turned this unit into a bonus science unit. Parker read Music Technology on our EPIC app.

Life Skills – How to React During an Emergency:

Parker read Do You Smell Smoke? on our EPIC app. This book taught kids how to properly handle a crisis with caution. Often times, kids may try to help and put themselves in greater danger. The story text used children calling the authorities and trying to contact the neighbor without placing themselves in danger. It was a great book for this unit.

Life Skills – Being a Polite Host:

If Jesus Came to Your House was the first book that came to mind when discussing being a good host. We also think of the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible. And recently, Parker started reading The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkein. Bilbo was an excellent example of being a good host, especially when it’s not expected.

We have so many wonderful memories from our Before FIAR preschool years. We learned about being a good hostess using the story of Martha and Mary.

Parker finished this unit by reading If Jesus Came to My House. We are quickly adding to our list of FIAR books to re-read before Parker graduates from the eighth grade.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook. He wrote with such an honest and vulnerable story that resonated all these years later. His tender heart never forgot this lesson.

SCIENCE:

Smoke:

First, Parker read The True Story of Smokey Bear on the Internet Archive.

I added a few clips on our The Cricket in Times Square playlist.

FINE ARTS:

Types of Music:

Our children have been exposed to many genres of music. They’ve listened to classical, jazz, the standards, and so much more. They’ve also seen LeCrae, The Gaither Vocal Band, Crowder, Toby Mac and Jeremy Camp in concert.

The Blue Danube:

Parker perused through My First Classical Music App on our ipad. We’ve had this app since the kids were little and have gone back to it many times while studying various composers through the years.

I also added a couple of clips of “The Blue Danube” to our The Cricket in Times Square playlist.

Chapter Book GRAB BAG:

I started creating a GRAB BAG for The Cricket in Times Square Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.
