CHAPTER 9 – The Chinese Dinner

Life Skills – Special Occasions – Your Own Chinese Dinner:

We just came back from Christmas break and this unit is very special to our family. Over the years, we’ve made it tradition to host our Christmas Even celebration at our favorite Chinese restaurant. The owner is so gracious to make room for our big party. Afterwards, we usually drive around looking at Christmas lights.

Chinese New Year:

Since we are still diving into Chinese culture, I thought Chinese New Year would be a great unit.

First, Parker read Celebrate Chinese New Year.

Afterwards, Parker completed a Chinese New Year worksheet from Little Red.

While reading Chinese New Year we took a moment to explore fireworks. Parker read The Explosive Story of Fireworks!

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

SCIENCE:

Rice:

Parker read Drive Thru The Road to Rice on our EPIC app.

Afterwards, Parker colored, cut and pasted the lifecycle of a rice plant from our Grab Bag.

Ivory:

Since ivory comes from African elephants, Parker read Elephants of Africa by Gail Gibbons.

Afterwards, we used our Parts of the Elephant Nomenclature cards.

FINE ARTS:

Cooking – Two Chinese Dinners:

Fried Rice:

The first dish that Parker prepared was beef ground rice.

The second dish was a modified version of the book’s wonton soup. We used chicken stock and frozen potstickers as the base of our soup. Then we added chopped green onions and soft-set boiled eggs. Everyone loved it.
