Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium (CH 5)

CHAPTER 5 – THE TURNING POINT

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Psalm 19:9-11 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Geography – Baltic Sea:

I really like to add picture books about each topic, because it just adds a little more reading without a heavy textbook feel. I ended up finding the story of Wladimir Koppen studying the weather on the Baltic Sea.

Paker read Climate: How Wladimir Koppen Studied the Weather and Drew the First Climate Map.

Afterwards, he watercolored the Baltic Sea on our World Map.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Locating Information Without the Internet:

We have studied the Dewey Decimal System while rowingMiss Rumphius, The Bee Tree and most recently the third chapter of You’re on Your Way Teddy Roosevelt.

Each time, we read Do You Know Dewey? Exploring the Dewey Decimal System and completed a Dewey Decimal System lapbook insert.

SCIENCE:

Chemistry – Experiments:

Before starting our experiments, Paker read Rourke’s World of Science Volume 5 Chemistry on our EPIC app.

Pulling Colors Out:

We prepared our coffee filter, marked it with washable Mr. Sketch green and black pens. I think we poured too much water that cause all the running up, crowded near the top. At least you were able to see the yellow and blue separate from the green marker.

Surface Tension Exploded:

This was such a quick and easy experiment, but it was VERY effective. You literally saw the surface tension using the black pepper. Parker LOVED this experiment the most.

Super Dilution:

This was a great experiment, but my pictures were lacking. I forget to take pictures AFTER adding the food coloring and after several points of water. The concept was clear and we talked about the color molecules still being in the water – father apart – which is why it looked clear.

HELPFUL LINKS:

Chapter Book GRAB BAG:

I started creating a GRAB BAG for Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.
