CHAPTER 3 – “In Which I Travel – by Land and Sea”

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Matthew 18:14 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

History – Whaling:

First, Parker read various sections of the Encyclopedia of American Indians about the tribes who were whalers.

For fun, he also read Burt Dow, Deep Water Man, by Robert McCloskey.

History – Ships:

Parker looked at the history of boats and ships in The Usborne Book of Knowledge.

Geography – Northeast United States:

First, Parker read about Portland and Portsmouth in Maine as well as Boston and Salem in Massachusetts in Travels with Charlie – Travelin’ the Northeast.

In addition to the material covered in that book, Parker recently read about the Salem Witchcraft Trials in his Mystery of History Volume 3 textbook.

After reading about Main and Massachusetts, he completed map work using the worksheet from our Hitty Grab Bag.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Vocabulary Words:

This chapter only had one vocabulary word, so we combined it with the vocabulary worksheet for the following chapter.

Sea Jargon:

Parker completed the Sea Jargon worksheet, for this chapter, from our Hitty Grab bag.

Greek Mythology – Diana:

For this unit, Parker read three different stories from our Usborne Book of Greek Myths.

SCIENCE:

Motion Sickness:

Parker has studied the human ear many times. For this unit, he simply read the FIAR manual. For many units that we’ve already covered, I like to find an easy read as a quick review.

Another great book, geared for younger children, is Ears are for Hearing by Paul Showers. It’s a quick easy review of the human ear and how it works.

I added a Ted-Ed clip about motion sickness on our Hitty Playlist.

FINE ARTS:

Cooking – Homemade Gingerbread:

Parker followed the “Cousin Robinson’s Gingerbread” recipe, as he measured and mixed the ingredients. It was Christmas in April at our house that afternoon.

Parker enjoyed a nice big slice of his gingerbread cake.

Illustrating Text:

Parker illustrated the the text in his FIAR Art Book.
