Characters – Dynamic, Static and Stereotypical:

SCIENCE:
Ocean Waves:

We began this unit, by reading Swashby and the Sea, because the storyline was a great tie in and we wanted to re-read as many of our previous FIAR books as we could this year.

Parker also read about waves in Julia Rothman’s Ocean Anatomy. Afterwards, he color-coded the Parts of the Wave worksheet from our Hitty Grab Bag.

Afterwards, Parker read about waves in W is for Waves an Ocean Alphabet and About Habitats Oceans on our EPIC app.
The Science of Sailing:

Parker re-read Arabella and My Blue Boat, because both books were about sailing the ocean. Rereading old FIAR books has become such a sweet way to end our FIAR homeschooling years before High School.

Parker completed a worksheet about sailing terms that we studied while rowing Arabella. He covered topics such as “heading up”, “bearing off”, “coming about or tacking” and “gybing”.

Parker also read Sarah’s Boat: A Young Girl Learns the Art of Sailing on Internet Archive.

He also read The Sailor Dog by Margaret Wise Brown, just for fun!
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
Research Project:
Parker decided to study “Coral Reefs” for his research project. As a result, he began reading and studying about coral reefs around the world.

Parker read Coral Reefs by Gail Gibbons and completed a few worksheets from our Hitty Grab Bag.
Service Project:

Parker continued collecting cans and bottles for money to donate toward Operation Christmas Child.
