Sonlight Level C (Week 5)

BIBLE:

Memory Verse:

I printed the next page (Matthew 6:11) in our Bible Verse Pack for the boys to work on this week.

Parker traced his Bible verse and illustrated it on Monday, because we had a field trip planned for Wednesday.

Parker cut and pasted the verse in his Bible lapbook on Tuesday and recited it from memory on Thursday.

Our Daily Bread:

Since this week’s verse talked about our daily bread, I thought it would be fun to make a loaf of bread.  The kids were reminiscing the soft pretzels we made at Christmas, so we whipped up a batch of soft pretzel dough.

I found a bread machine recipe and parks helped pour the wet ingredients into the loaf pan.

Parks started measuring the dry ingredients and dumping them on top of the water.

Big brother Bub joined in on the fun, adding some whole wheat flour to make our pretzels a bit more healthful.  Bub really is our resident foodie!

He added our dry yeast and we set the bread machine on our dough setting and went for a nature walk!

While cooking dinner, the kids shaped their own pretzels and I popped them into the oven.

Honestly, they were good, but they weren’t as good as the recipe we made before.  Still everyone was happy with their “daily bread”!

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Ayran – A Turkish Drink:

This was actually a carry over activity from last week’s reading.  Haley remembered making this when she was in second grade.  SO many fun memories….

While everyone was showering after our morning walk, I set out the ingredients for our ayran.

This is a typical Turkish kid’s drink made with water, greek yogurt, and salt.

Haley made hers and tasted it as is.  We added a little natural sugar alternative and it was much better.

The boys agreed it was better with the sweetener added.

A refreshing drink after a refreshing shower!

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Grammar Grab Bag – Week 5:

I created an Apple Farm Grammar Grab Bag for this week.

Spelling:

On Monday, Parks used his spelling cards and worksheet to practice writing his words down.

Sheep & Wheat Compound Word Hunt:

I printed the Sheep and Wheat Compound Word cards (included in this week’s GG Bag).  I hid the wheat word cards around the room and taped the sheep word cards on the window.

Parker found and taped the wheat word cards next to their matching sheep word cards.

A Bushel of Similes:

This week we reviewed similes using our apple themed worksheet (included in the GG Bag).

This was a good review of similes.  I also added a Similes and Metaphor clip to our Sonlight Level C playlist.

Beginner’s Bible – Daily Reading Activity:

Each day Parker reads a story from his Beginner’s Bible.  Each week is full of great Bible stories and I try to weave a few activities here and there.

I made him a parting of the red sea snack.  I spread some frosting on the sides of a graham cracker and sliced strawberries to place as the “red sea”.

He LOVED this snack!  What a sweet way to read through the Bible! 🙂

JUST FOR FUN:

Apple Tasting Tree:

It’s that time of year again!  I set up our Apple Tasting Tree and added our apples to color in a red pocket.

Everyone was excited to see the Apple Tasting Tree up on the playroom door!  It’s the simple things…

Haley put up our first and favorite Honey Crisp apple.

Jordan colored our Granny Smith apple.

He proudly added it to our tree with a comic strip added to the back….he’s sure to add a little humor where ever he goes!

Happy weekend everyone!  See you next week to continue our learning adventure (week 6)!
