CHAPTER 8
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and lesson material for this chapter, using the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

On other days, he continued reading and studying Bible lessons with his Power of Words book.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized James 1:17 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
History- The Phonograph – an Edison Invention:

Parker read Hooray for Inventors.

Afterwards, Parker completed a few Edison research worksheets from our Skylark Grab Bag.
Making Instead of Buying – Giving Precious Gifts:
The kids have always made cards for birthdays and other events. They tend to put so much thought into them, the message and artwork are targeted specifically to the recipient’s character and personality.
Last Father’s Day, the kids really put a great deal of effort into their dad’s gift. The filled a box with mementos representing things that their father did or shared with them as far back as their memories could go. It was really sweet.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker responded to the writing and discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.
Vocabulary:

Parker completed the chapter 7 and 8 vocabulary worksheet.
Book Recommendations:

As we discussed earlier, Parker had already started reading some of Patricia MacLachlan’s chapter books. He finished White Fur Flying and began reading Fly Away. Though I loved both of these, but Parker did not share the same enthusiasm.

I’m not giving up completely. Since Parker loves baseball, I’m going to see if he loves Edward’s Eyes or Painting the Game.

Per the FIAR manual, he read What You Know First. He did enjoy this picture book.
Read-Aloud:

Mary Emma & Company is our current read-aloud. We read books together when we have free moments in our middle school schedule. We’ve enjoyed read-aloud time over the years homeschooling.
SCIENCE:
Shade – a Scarce Commodity on the Prairie:
We know a shadow is cast when something blocks the sun; however, the prairie was flatland without mountains and rarely big trees. Shadows provide comfort from the scorching sun on hot days.

To dive a little deeper, Parker read What Makes a Shadow?
OTHER FUN STUFF:
Apple Tasting Tree:

I stopped by the store to pick up some groceries and grabbed a few varieties of apples to sketch, sample and add to our Apple Tasting Tree.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for the Skylark Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our Skylark Pinterest board.
Youtube Playlist:
As with our other rows, we created a Skylark Playlist with read-alouds, music, science, and other clips.
