Skylark (CH 9)

CHAPTER 9

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for chapter 2, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

On other days, he continued reading reading and studying Bible with his Power of Words book

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Exodus 13:21 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

History and Geography – Wells:

First, learning about wells and watertables always reminds me of Aesop’s Fable, The Crow and the Pitcher.

The last time we read Aesop’s Fables for Children was while rowing Andy and the Circus.

The crow was clever to use pebbles to bring the water level up to where his beak could reach it. Both boys took turns dropping pebbles into the jar, mimicking the crow.

Since it was a while ago, I had Parker read The Crow and the Pitcher.

Parker watched several clips about wells on our Skylark playlist.

In fact, he recreated one while rowing The Bravest of Us All.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker responded to the writing and discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.

Vocabulary:

Parker completed the chapter vocabulary words and added them in his FIAR Notebook.

Dealing with Hard Choices:

This was a topic Parker and I talked about together. He mentioned some of the recent decisions we had to make about his grandpa. It’s such a sensitive subject, because my father recently passed away, almost a year after his Grandmother. Thankfully, as born-again believers, we know that we’ll see each other again in Heaven. FIAR has given our family many opportunities to talk about deep and wonderful things that in other settings might seem forced or awkward. This is such a beautiful program that has blessed our family during our homeschooling journey.

Additional Reading:

Parker started reading Painting the Game and he’s really enjoying it. He’s also reading Strawberry Girl, because he wasn’t with Haley and Jordan when we read it together during their early elementary homeschooling. Lastly, Parker and I are reading aloud Mary Emma & Company as we have free time.

SCIENCE:

Watertable – What It Is and Create Your Own:

Parker read The Water Beneath Your Feet on our EPIC app.

I set out all the things Parker would need to make his watertable.

Parker added his stones until the mason jar was roughly about two-thirds full.

He poured in the water until he had a resovoir that was about one-half inch above the sediment layer.

Parker then used a Sharpie to mark the initial waterline.

Afterwards, Parker set it in the side yard to soak up the sun. We’ll check and record our results tomorrow.

ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:

Apple Tasting Tree:

The boys’ guitar teacher brought us fresh golden delicious apples from his previous student’s farm.

No sooner had we washed them than the boys grabbed several and devoured them.

Obviously, he colored a Golden Delicious variety for our tasting tree.

Our tree is looking a little more colorful with each new addition.

HELPFUL LINKS:

Chapter Book GRAB BAG:

I started creating a GRAB BAG for the Skylark Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

Pinterest Board:

You can find most of the activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our Skylark Pinterest board.

Youtube Playlist:

As with our other rows, we created a Skylark Playlist with read-alouds, music, science, and other clips.
