Helen Keller (CH 5-6)

CHAPTER 5 & 6 – W-A-T-E-R! SO MUCH TO LEARN

BIBLE:

FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.

Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized John 20:29 as his Bible verse for this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Fostering Anticipation for Each New Day:

Immediately, this topic reminded me of the third chapter of the book of Lamentations. How wonderful to know that “God’s mercies are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:23).

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker responded to the writing and discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.

Etymology – The Study of Words:

Parker noticed his One True Sentence lessons ask about the history behind select words each week. I absolutely love Blackbird & Company’s Language Arts program.

Creative Writing – the Smells of Spring:

This was a fun element that started as a creative writing prompt and ended up as a fun science unit. Since we are currently experiencing the fall season, I brought out our Gerda Muller Spring book for inspiration.

I normally don’t take to wordless picture books, but I quickly changed my tune when I opened up one of her Seasons Treasury books. Her illustrations evoke all that we fondly associate with each season.

Parker perused through every page, remembering the sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and touch of everything associated with the season of spring.

Next, he read Busy Spring Nature Wakes Up, part of the “Seasons in the Wild” series.

He wrote his notes using the Spring Sensations worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.

Since, we’re in the midst of all things apples and pumpkins, we finished this unit reading Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons.

With all the apples around the house, especially the ones that weren’t juicy and delicious “as is”, I cooked them down with a little butter, sugar, cinnamon and a dash of love.

Vocabulary:

Parker completed the Chapter 5-6 vocabulary worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.

Read-Aloud:

We’re reading aloud Mary Emma & Company  as time permits. This particular book is Parker’s favorite. Let’s face it Moody is a great storyteller.

HELPFUL LINKS:

Chapter Book GRAB BAG:

I started creating a GRAB BAG for the Helen Keller Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.
