CHAPTER 7 – A TIME TO MOVE ON
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Luke 2:10 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
History & Geography – The Circus:

First, Parker read If You Lived with the Circus to learn a little more about life in a circus troupe.
I also added a circus related clips – one about Ringling Brother’s circus – on our Helen Keller Playlist .
History – Louis Braille:

When the kids were younger, we read the suggested Out of Darkness The Story of Louis Braille by Russell Freedman. I searched high and low, but I couldn’t find our copy to read with Parker.

Instead, he read A Picture Book of Louis Braille.

Afterwards, he completed the “Braille Brain Bogglers” cracking the code from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker responded to the writing and discussion question in his FIAR Notebook.
Vocabulary:

Parker completed the chapter 7 vocabulary worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.
Creative Writing – Frosty Fingertips:

Parker and I talked about the concept of having “frosty fingertips”. We envisioned – in our mind’s eye – what that person looked like. Afterwards, he wrote about “his ideas”frosty fingertips” in his FIAR Notebook.

Though this was a Language Arts unit, we dove a little deeper about the “sense of touch”. Parker first read about skin in the Smithsonian Human Body! and The Usborne Complete Book of the Human Body.

He also read I Can Tell by Touching from the “Let’s Read-and-Find-Out Science” series.

Later, he labeled the “Parts of the Skin” worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.

We also conducted a “Touchy Feely Guessing Game” using the five senses science worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.
Read-Aloud:

We’re reading Mary Emma & Company as time permits. This particular book is Parker’s favorite. Let’s face it Moody is a great storyteller.
SCIENCE:
Primates:

First, Parker read about primates in our National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia.

He also read National Geographic Kids Monkeys.

Afterwards, Parker completed the Sorting by Primates worksheet from our Helen Keller Grab Bag.

He also read Gorillas by Gail Gibbons.

Afterwards, he color-coded the parts of the Gorilla using the book as reference.

To complete this unit, Parker read The Story of Jane Goodall.
FINE ARTS:
Juggling:
Parker watched several clips about learning to juggle on our Helen Keller Playlist .
ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:
Harvest Festival:
We don’t celebrate Halloween in our home, but we redeem this day by having a Harvest Festival at our church. The kids dress up in Bible themed costumes, we serve pizza, there’s a puppet show for the little kids and carnival games where kids earn candy and prizes. It’s such a wonderful outreach and something we look forward to every year.

When the kids were younger, I often chose circus themed books to row during this time of the year. Since this is Parkers last year rowing FIAR chapter books, I dressed up the kitchen table with circus themed items and served the kids a fun apple cake breakfast and oui yogurt.

We read Andy and the Circus, Clown of God.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for the Helen Keller Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our Helen Keller Pinterest board.
Youtube Playlist:
As with our other rows, we created a Helen Keller Playlist with read-alouds, music, science, and other clips.
