CHAPTERS 1 – SMALL BEGINNINGS
READY TO ROW:
COVER ART:

Parker completed the cover art for this row by drawing Radium as it would appear on the Periodic Table of Elements.
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized 2 Timothy 2:13 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
History – Exploring our Timeline – The Late 1800s:

Just as he did for Helen Keller, I had Parker review our Timelines of Everything book for Marie Curie’s lifespan, specifically the late 1800s.
Geography – Poland:

Parker read about Poland in our Book of Nations then completed the “All About Poland” country report from our Grab Bag.

Afterwards, he watercolored Poland on our World Map (Beautiful Feet Books).
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.
Vocabulary:

Parker completed the vocabulary words for this chapter using the worksheet from our Grab Bag.
Being a Good Storyteller:

First, Parker and I discussed the greatest story tellers in our family. He mentioned both his Grandma and Grandpa who both went home to be with the Lord. They lived full long lives and retold some of the most interesting and precious stories. They had the privilege of spending so much time with both. There is something beautiful about the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents.

Of course, talking about story telling and grandparents made us think of the In Grandma’s Attic series by Arleta Richardson. This collection is one of our all-time favorite read-alouds.
SCIENCE:
A Brief Introduction to Physics:

Parker read most of the chapter on general physics. I love using the Usborne books when covering science, but I get frustrated with the level of evolution verbiage added. I found one of Haley’s textbooks from her Sonlight studies that covered physics. I love that it is a creation-based, but it is rather dry to read.
Geology – Malachite:

Parker read about malachite in Our World in Pictures The Elements Book.

Parker also read excerpts from National Geographic Kids Everything Rocks and Minerals, Weird But True Rocks & Minerals, and the Ultimate Rock-Opedia.

Afterwards, he completed a Rocks, Minerals and More worksheet from our Grab Bag.
Tuberculosis:
“Phu’O’ng and An Go to the Doctor” was the only children’s book I could find that was specifically about Tuberculosis. I added the clip and some other medical clips about TB on our Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium playlist.
Barometers:

First, Parker read Weather Words by Gail Gibbons.

Parker and I followed the instructions from the FIAR Teacher’s Manual to create our own Barometer. He kept a log of the readings in our kitchen.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the books, activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our Marie Curie and The Discovery of Radium Pinterest Board.
Youtube Playlist:
As with our other rows, we created Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium playlist.
