CHAPTER 4 – THE SACRIFICE
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Psalm 42:5 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Life Skills – Generosity:
One of the greatest books about generosity is Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. The tree gave a part of himself until there was nothing left to give. This story is sweet, sad and evokes strong emotions. As a child, I loved the story, but I couldn’t help feeling enraged as the child took everything from the tree. As a parent, I understand the love of the tree for the boy. I see the selfless giving and the joy the tree received seeing the boy’s happiness. I will always love this book.

Parker read The Giving Tree and reacted very differently than I did. He said that it made him realize how quickly life passes and that we need to savor it.
Life Skills – Realizing Your Dreams:

This subject is close to Parker’s heart. He always wanted a baseball card company and he’s created one with the help of his dad.

This also reminded me of Katherine Sessions dream of seeing trees fill up the barren land of San Diego. So Parker read The Tree Lady and we added another book to our list of FIAR re-reads.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.
Vocabulary:

Parker completed the vocabulary worksheet for this chapter using the worksheet from our Grab Bag.
SCIENCE:
Metric System:

Parker read The Metric System on our EPIC app. Later, I realized I bought The Metric System by David Adler. I love his books and would highly recommend them for older students looking to review basic mathematical principals.

Afterwards, he completed a “Measure Me Math” worksheet from our Grab Bag.
Sugar From Beets:

First, Parker read Start to Finish From Sugar Beet to Sugar by Lisa Owings.
Next, he watched How It’s Made Beet Sugar on our Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium playlist.

Lastly, Parker read The Hickory Chair, because we learned about beet sugar while rowing The Hickory Chair. This added one more book to our list of FIAR books to reread
Economics – Poland’s Monetary System:

Parker read about the Russian rubles in National Geographic Kids Everything Money. Afterwards, he completed an “Economics Currency Comparison” worksheet from our Grab Bag.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
