Sonlight Core A (Week 32)

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Wild Places:

I created a Wild Places Habitat book to go alongside our read-aloud of Usborne’s Wild Places.  You can download your FREE copy here.

We read more about mountains and added animals too.

Wild Places Mountain Booklet Inserts

We colored and inserted a “layers of the Moon of the Mountains” page.  You can purchase the Mountain Booklet Inserts here.

We colored, cut, and glued our mountain animals in our booklet.

Volcano Fun:

We read about volcanoes and went to the kitchen to make our own.

We brought out playdough and empty plastic bottles. The kids wrapped the bottle with playdough, forming it into a volcano.

The kids spooned baking soda into the top of their volcano (plastic bottle).

I gave them a squeeze bottle of diluted vinegar tinted with red food coloring.

Let the lava flow! They had a blast making their volcanoes erupt.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Phonics:

Ending Sounds:

Since we’re studying Madeline in Jordan’s FIAR unit, I made a Madeline-inspired worksheet with pictures and letters to match the ending sounds.

MATH:

Months of the Year:

I made a House for Hermit pack for the boys to work on this week.

We read A House for Hermit by Eric Carle and I set out the Months of the Year cards.

Jordan worked on matching the months of the year with the changes to Hermit’s home.

Parker worked on putting the months of the year in order.

After reviewing the months of the year, the boys completed the follow-up worksheets.

SKILL BUILDER:

This week we continued to work on our scissor skills.  Jordan was learning about birds, so we weaved a cutting activity into our birdie day.

For the Birds:

We started our morning on a birdie theme.  We read about birds and ate a birdie breakfast.

img_0627We read A Nest is Noisy and talked about oviparous animals (animals that hatch from eggs).  I set out an egg activity for the boys to work on.

They took turns cracking open the eggs to find the hidden animal.  They sorted each animal by Oviparous (hatch from egg) or Non Oviparous (live birth).  This was a fun and educational activity.

Lifecycle of a Bird Booklet:

We read Have You Heard The Nesting Bird? and I gave the boys a Bird Lifecycle booklet to cut and color.

Parker worked on his scissor skills again this week. He cut out our lifecycle of a bird activity.

They colored, cut, and stapled their bird lifecycle booklet.  The boys added them to their lapbooks.

Week 32 is finished and we’re looking forward to the next week! 🙂
