Thomas A. Edison: Young Inventor (Ch 14)

TOM’S OWN NEWSPAPER

BIBLE:

Memory Verse:

Jordan memorized Joshua 6:27 for this chapter. He copied it in his FIAR notebook.

Character Study:

We continued to read through our chapter lessons in the FIAR Bible and Character Supplement.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

History – Gutenberg and the Printing Press:

Jordan read about Gutenberg in Hooray For Inventors.

FINE ARTS:

I added our “Fine Arts” section here, since it tied directly into his reading on Gutenberg.

Afterwards, he created his own rustic printing press, following the FIAR guide.

History – Market Prices Today:

Jordan and his dad often talk about the stock market and investing. They also discuss stocks wished they invested in – “the one” that got away! Good money management is part of being a good steward. We’ve taught our kids the principle of tithing. Their grandfather frequently quotes I Samuel 2:30, “I will honor those who honor me”.

Recently, we opened savings accounts for the two eldest kids. Now they can see how much money they’ve earned, saved and spent. They also visualize how money – not spent – accrues interest. It becomes a fun game of saving money to earn money.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Learning to Communicate with the Deaf:

I rarely share about myself, but sign language is near to my heart. As a young girl, I was fascinated by Helen Keller. I checked out every book about her. I loved watching The Miracle Worker. I believe God planted that seed years before I would need it.

After high school, I wasn’t motivated to go to college. After a few months, I took an ASL course locally. God rekindled that love to get me back on campus. I studied sign language while finishing my lower division courses in junior college. I later transferred to a state college to get a degree in Business, but I used sign language to interpret for a deaf woman at church and later to communicate with my niece.

Bub perused through my old American Sign Language book, Signing How to Speak with Your Hands.

He practiced a few signs using the guide as reference.

Writing & Discussion Question:

Jordan answered the discussion question in his FIAR notebook.

Different Styles of Writing:

As I discussed in a previous post, the Blackbird and Company Language Arts program has given Jordan a wide variety of writing assignments this year. Though he still doesn’t enjoy writing, he does have a flicker of creativity that shows up when the assignment sparks his interest. One day something may fan that tiny flicker of a flame.

Subscriptions:

Jordan is very familiar with subscriptions. When they were younger we subscribed to Highlights, National Geographic Kids, and Little Passports. As a family we have many subscribe and save opportunities through Amazon Prime. Jordan himself has an electronic subscription through Minecraft. He’s seen both the cost and benefits associated with various subscriptions.

SCIENCE:

Human Anatomy – The Ear:

Bub read an excerpt about hearing in What’s Science All About? and he also read Ears are for Hearing by Paul Showers.

Afterwards, Jordan completed a parts of the human ear worksheet.
