CHAPTER 6 – Sai Fong
BIBLE:
FIAR Bible Supplement:

Parker read both the scripture and the lesson material for this chapter, from the FIAR Bible Supplement Guide.
Bible Verse:

Parker wrote and memorized Revelation 1:8 as his Bible verse for this chapter.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
History & Geography – China:

Parker read about China in our Book of Nations.

Afterwards, he completed a China country report using the template from our Grab Bag.
Geography – Yangtze River:
We had so much fun rowing The Story About Ping when Jordan was in elementary school. Making the Yangtze River out of playdough was one of our favorite memories.

Parker and I read The Story About Ping together., because we want to re-read as many FIAR books as possible since this is Parker’s last FIAR year.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Writing & Discussion Question:

Parker answered this chapter’s writing and discussion question in his FIAR notebook.
Writing Accents:

As suggested in the manual, Parker read The Name Jar.
Vocabulary:

Parker completed the vocabulary worksheet from our Grab Bag.
Poetry Copywork:
Twas the Night Before Christmas:

Parker continued using Tomie dePaola’s Twas the Night Before Christmas to write, illustrate and memorize the poem using the poetry template from our Grab Bag.
SCIENCE:
Wind Science:
Since we were making a wind chime project, I thought it might be nice to combine it with a wind science unit.

Parker read The STEM Encyclopedia of Wind on our EPIC app.
FINE ARTS:
Create Your Own Wind Chimes:

Parker and I created our wind chime using bits and pieces of crafting scraps. We hung it in our “Secret Garden” which is the garden we use for eclectic art and plants.
ACTIVITIES & OTHER FUN STUFF:
Christmas in China:
China is not a Christian country, but is commonplace for some Chinese to observe more of a commercial version of Christmas. I found a true Christmas story about a little beggar girl in China who discovers the true story of Jesus’ birth through missionaries in China.

Parker read The Coming Day, a true Christmas story from China.

We still remember reading aloud Grace Lin’s Christmas celebrations from The Year of the Dog. We read the whole series, because they were THAT good!
I added this clip to The Cricket in Times Square playlist.
HELPFUL LINKS:
Chapter Book GRAB BAG:
I started creating a GRAB BAG for The Cricket in Times Square Chapter Book Unit. The Grab Bag series is a collection of worksheets and/or activities that I create while studying the FIAR Chapter Book units with my children. I will post it as soon as it’s available for purchase.

*NOTE: Please be aware that any printable from the Grab Bag series may have worksheets that are similar and/or the same as those available in our other printables. We try to include anything that could enhance a student’s learning experience while rowing the chapter book series.
Pinterest Board:
You can find most of the books, activities, ideas, and printables from this post on our The Cricket in Times Square Pinterest Board.
